Here's a wild idea for the Mets this offseason. It sounds crazy but it's actually plausible.
Trade Jose Reyes and Mike Pelfrey to the Twins for Johan Santana.
Sign Johan Santana for 6 years $150 million and sign Alex Rodriguez for 10 years $300 million.
You add roughly $55 million per year to the payroll, but if you get rid of Green ($9.5m in 2007), Glavine ($7.5m), Castillo ($5.75m) and LoDuca ($6.2m), plus Reyes ($2.5m in 2007, $4m in 2008), that's a savings of about $33 million. And you wouldn't need to spend much to replace those guys because you have Milledge, Santana, A-Rod, Gotay and Castro (who could be resigned for about $2 million per) to fill those spots.
Also, when Delgado ($16m in 2008), Pedro ($11m in 2008) and El Duque ($6.5m) go after next year there would be money left over.
This would give you a line up of Milledge, Beltran, Wright, A-Rod, Alou, Delgado, Castro and Gotay. The rotation would be Santana, Pedro, El Duque, Perez and Maine. That seems like a good team to me.
When answering this question please go by only the information contained herein not other eventualities such as if Humber were in the deal instead of Pelfrey or if the Mets could still keep Alou.
Also I know that the cost of the contracts of Green and Castillo were defrayed by other teams but I tried to keep it simple.
My answer is no, for a simple reason. Alex Rodriguez is not a winning player. Something about him is contrary to winning on every team he's played for. I wouldn't want to take the chance that his selfishness and lack of clutch hitting torpedoes what I still believe is a bright future for the next 10 years.

I Don't Even Know What To Say
I feel like I should write something about the Mets but the only thing I can think of is "they suck."
I still love the Mets and I still root for them desperately to make the playoffs, even though I can't envision this team doing anything substantial without a miraculous reversal of performance from the bullpen.
It might be easier on Mets fans if they just lose the next three games and be done with it. But that has never been the Mets way. They always reel you in, then crush your dreams.
I envision a Phillies win and Mets loss Friday.
A Mets win and Phillies loss on Saturday.
Then a Mets loss and Phillies win on Sunday.
What do you think? Use the comments section to vent.
Read the Recap for more detailed game analysis.

Don't Cry Over Spilled Soda
I watched last night's dramatic Met game in my bedroom, which is rare since I don't have DVR up there. But right after Luis Castillo's game-tying single I jumped up and startled the dog. He got up and ran to me, and banged into my nightstand, knocking my can of soda onto the floor. Luckily it didn't spill, it just sort of splattered. But Mrs. Poop was furious.
Then after the game, after the double play, I jumped up to lead Diesel downstairs to give him his reward for a Mets victory.
On the way out of the room, Diesel again banged into the table knocking the can onto the floor again, prompting Mrs. Poop to yell at us again. Luckily for us, this time the can was empty.

Read the Recap
Mets fans, I've been very disappointed with the readership numbers at the Happy Recap. I've even considered shuttering the site. But I've figured out the problem. The team was too good. There is nothing to complain about. Until now.
Last night's game was a disaster, but there are many things to discuss. Did Delgado run hard enough down the line? Should Willie have let Heilman face Rollins? Should Endy have squeezed instead of hurting himself? What about the contact play?
Plus I give my view of how the next month will go with the combined difficulties of injuries and a tough schedule.

They've Got Issues
Right now the Mets are a .600 team but they've lost four of six and the two wins were lucky. Injuries have started to hit and cracks are starting to show. The Recap analyzes three issues confronting the team and what should be done about them.
