Three Curry Commercials

A young Stephen Curry stars in a Burger King commercial with his father, Dell.

An older Stephen Curry does an hilarious "This is Sportscenter" commercial.

Not related to Stephen Curry directly but "the time he hit a 38-foot shot to win the game in overtime, and you wish at some point, at some moment in your life, that you could be that perfect too. And that's why you cheer for him. That's why you believe in heroes."

Two Big Reasons to Watch Dancing With the Stars This Season

Model Charlotte McKinney who was billed by some as the heir apparent to Kate Upton (it's apparent why) is headlining the latest Dancing with the Stars cast. I trust double-sided tape will be prominently involved.

Here are the other 10 "stars" she will be competing against, and I use that term loosely.

Suzanne Somers
Patti LaBelle
Michael Sam
Nastia Liukin
Robert Herjavec
Willow Shields
Rumer Willis
Redfoo
Riker Lynch
Noah Galloway
Charlotte McKinney

Falling Far Short of the Original, Twice

Reebok is out with a new series of ads based on the famous barbershop scenes from Coming to America. They feature Shaquille O'Neal and Shawn Kemp. This one also stars Allen Iverson.

It's not a very funny homage to Coming to America, nor to the "practice" rant.
But it's out there and I know you rely on me to bring you these things.

I'm Not Sure This Analogy Really Works

Duluth Trading company has a new series of ads for their "Fire Hose" pants.

Trimming an unruly bush. Ok, clear double meaning there, but how does it relate to men's work pants?

Now, a giant angry beaver?

What do vagina references have to do with men's work pants?

If you're wearing work pants while having sex, you're doing it wrong.

Get a pair!

Super Bowl Commercials

Maybe it was the quality of the game that soured me, but I can remember a single commercial that I actually liked.

"Puppy Love" - Budweiser

"Cowboy Kid" - Doritos

"Time Machine" - Doritos

"The Phone Call" - Radio Shack

"Dad's Sixth Sense" - Hyundai

"Gracie" - Cheerios

"Empowering" - Microsoft

"Going All the Way" - Coca-Cola

"The Spill" - Danon Oikos Greek Yogurt

"Nice" - Hyundai

"Doberhuahua" - Audi

"The Truth" - Kia

Mrs. Poop in 15 Years

This new Old Spice ad may seem kind of creepy to some, but to Mrs. Poop and maybe other mothers who don't like their sons getting older, it really hits home.

Kate Upton and Snoop Dogg Team Up and the Results are Sensational

"You Got What I Eat" - Snoop Dogg featuring Kate Upton

This new Hot Pockets commercial is probably the best commercial for anything ever. And it features a cameo from Lil Bow Weezy.

Super Bowl Ads

I thought this was a pretty weak crop this year. No real standout laugh out loud funny ones.

"Brotherhood" - Budweiser
They always have a good Clydesdales ad, this one was really sweet.

"Miracle Stain" - Tide
I love this satire of the dumbest thing in American culture in the last 10 years, the Virgin Mary Grilled Cheese Sandwich. "Stain on a stick!"

"Fashionista Daddy" - Doritos
Fathers who have daughters can relate to this one.

"Whole Again" - Jeep
Narrated by Oprah Winfrey, a pretty nice ad.

"Space Babies" - Kia
Pretty funny description of where babies come from.

"Goat 4 Sale" - Doritos

"Deion Sanders Returns" - NFL
Leon Sandcastle

"Prom" - Audi
It was totally worth it.

"Viva Young" - Taco Bell
"Nosotros somos jovenes." I guess the song really was in Spanish. I didn't pick this up the first time.

"Get Happy" - VW
The only borderline racist commercial in this year's Super Bowl. I didn't find it offensive, actually found it mildly amusing, but not necessarily a great ad for VW. "Respect bossman!"

"Big Kiss" - Go Daddy
I read where they had to do 65 takes of this.

Super Bowl Ads

"Free to Pee" - TaxAct

"The Tease" - Oikos Greek Yogurt
It was nice to see John Stamos still working

"Thing Called Love" - Samsung
I love this song and Billy loved the Urlacher cameo. Did it really air in the full 90 second version? Is that $10m?

"Rescue Dog" - Bud Light
Very clever way to get the product's tagline ("Here We Go") into the vernacular. And they are doing a good thing for abandoned animals.

"Business Trip" - CareerBuilder
They're drinking banana daquiris, get it? I don't like animals in costumes and these commercials are getting old

"Vampire Party" - Audi
So Audi spends millions of dollars to advertise its new headlights?

"The Big Grab" - BMW
Or a heated steering wheel?

"Man's Best Friend" - Doritos
Anything that has to do with killing cats is fine with me.

"Sling Baby" - Doritos
Both of these Doritos ads were user-generated content. Doritos has had a lot of success with these, and saved millions on advertising agencies.

"It's Reinvented" - Toyota Camry
This is the reinvented baby, it doesn't poop. It is also a time machine. You knew when they said poop this was going to make my list of best ads. But I am little discomfited by the guy's nonchalant attitude toward the reinvented couch, in male.

"King's Court" - Pepsi
I hate Elton John, Flava Flav is annoying and I had no idea who the chick was. Turns out she is Melanie Amaro from X-Factor.

"Just My Shell" - M&Ms

"2012" - Chevy Silverado
This was my least favorite ad. Drive a Silverado or you will die. I guess it's a good message for the worriers among us.

This Can't Wait Either

I thought Matthew Broderick's send-up of "Ferris Bueller" for a Honda ad was quite clever. But I may have set a dangerous precedent. Because now I have to share this Jerry Seinfeld ad for Acura which has several great "Seinfeld" references sprinkled in. This commercial is at least 3 times as good as the Broderick one, but it will be the last I post before the Super Bowl.

This Can't Wait

Normally I wait until after the Super Bowl to post about the commercials but since millions of people have already watched the Matthew Broderick Honda CR-V send-up of "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" I thought I should share it now or never.

Legal Sea Food Ads

My favorite seafood joint, Legal Sea Food is out with a series of cheeky new ads. They start as faux-environmental ads with messages like "Save the Trout" but they end with "save the trout so we can grill that baby up real nice."
As an environmentalist, an animal lover, a food lover, someone who believes the natural order of the universe allows even requires animals to eat other animals, and an avowed smartass, I love the ad campaign.
But of course the PETA wackos are up in arms over it.

Jim Walsh Has Fallen on Hard Times

James Eckhouse apparently has been unable to find much work after his stint as Jim Walsh, Brandon and Brenda's father, on Beverly Hills, 90210 ended.
He's now slumming in a V8 commercial.

Way to Insult Half Your Target Audience

Manhattan Mini Storage has come up with a smarmy and mostly clever ad campaign you can see on billboards across the city. I like the one saying "If you watch Hoarders and wonder what the big deal is..."

This one however offends me:

"Why leave a city that has six professional sports teams, and also the Mets?"

Ok, so it is kind of funny and it shows how Mets fans are an agreeable bunch who can laugh at ourselves and our team, as opposed to those humorless cretins who root for the Yankees.

Chicopee's Finest

If you have been watching as much of the NCAA tournament as I have you have seen the same commercials over and over again. But when it comes to the Miller Lite ads with the hot bartenders making fun of douchebags, you probably aren't complaining.

One in particular stood out in my mind, the one where the hot blonde in the bikini makes fun a European man thong.

And I knew I recognized that girl from somewhere. Turns out it is Sabina Gadecki, former hostess for the World Poker Tour.

While researching this post, I found out two interesting things about Sabina. First, she is from our favorite town in Western Massachusetts, Chicopee. Though I would have much preferred to see her with her thong hanging out during a scuffle at Denny's.

Second, she is dating former Knick David Lee.

Super Bowl Ads

An underwhelming crop of Super Bowl ads this year. Nothing really stands out to me. The two I liked best were both subtle sexual innuendos, big shocker.

Faith Hill Teleflora. No one had heard of this company before so they needed to do something to get noticed. This probably worked,

Pepsi Max First Date. Another ad taking advantage of the one track minds of men.

Pepsi Max Love Hurts. All the ads for Pepsi Max and Doritos were user generated. This one was clearly sent in by the Concierge.

Snickers Logging. A lot of people liked this one and I did too but it was too similar to last year’s Betty White ad to really be a standout.

Volkswagen The Force. This one was really great the only problem is so many people (14m hits) saw it before the Super Bowl. But if you hadn’t, this could definitely be your favorite. I love the remote starter.

Doritos Pug Attack. Anything with a dog being cute is bound to be liked by 90% of the people.

Bud Light Dog Sitter. This is one the exception. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: I love dogs, I love poker but I hate dogs playing poker. We don’t need to see dogs walking around on two legs serving beer. Of course evil Mrs. Poop says this is her favorite.

CareerBuilder Parking Lot. I know it’s a running gimmick with CareerBuilder but I feel like the monkey thing is already played out. And once again, animals dressed as or behaving like people is an immediate turnoff to millions of Americans.

Doritos Best Part. This ad got the worst reviews of any Super Bowl ad I saw. I thought it was kind of funny because the creepiness was obviously very intentional.

Kim Kardashian Skechers. I love Kim Kardashian and I thought she looked great here but I thought the dumping my trainer bit was a little stupid.

NFL Best Fans Ever. I loved this one. A little obsession of mine is remembering where various television shows are set. I loved the superimposed jerseys/shirts/hats and foam fingers. I’m not complaining about Sofia Vergara being a Redskins fans but Modern Family is set in California. I actually wish they included “Family Ties” because they were well known Bengals fans. And how could the Eagles biggest fan, Cory Matthews not make this montage?

Sealy Afterglow. A very racy commericial for such a staid and boring company. I noticed they had a lot of interracial couples which I appreciate.

Carmax Kid in a Candy Store. Kind of clever, wrestler in a folding chair factory. I think I will start using that one.

LeBron James Listened to "Garden Party"

The LeBron strikes back. In his new Nike ad "What Should I Do?" LeBron goes wild with the Ricky Nelson mantra "you can't please everyone so you gotta please yourself."

The ad is full of subtext reminding the viewer that he "did this before" meaning going to SVSM to play with his friends. And he takes nasty shots at Michael Jordan (for his awful Hall of Fame speech) and at Charles Barkley (for being a fat, loudmouth who never won anything).

I love it. As someone who mostly defended his decision (though voiced displeasure with the Decision special) I'm glad LeBron is basically saying to the world "I did what I did, I'm happy with it, I don't care what you think."

That's a great attitude to have but now the Heat need to start winning some games.

Jim Beam Should Have Ponied Up $3 Mil to Put This On During the Super Bowl

A great Jim Beam commercial reminds of those great Days when Diesel was still a puppy.

Super Bowl Ads

I thought the Super Bowl ads as a whole were lackluster this year but here are a few we enjoyed

Starting with my personal favorite, Doritos dog collar:

Bud Light T-Pain, did you know there are iPhone apps that do this to your voice:

Motorola Megan Fox Sexting. I love the ad genius who came up with this one, let's put Megan Fox in a bathtub sending naked pictures of herself. Really hard to come up with that idea:

Hyundai Brett Favre 2020. At least he's self-deprecating, sort of:

Boost Mobile Shuffle. I didn't find this funny at all, only including it because Billy loved it:

The original 7-minute long "Super Bowl Shuffle" was much funnier.

The Bud Light House, I haven't heard too much buzz about this one but I found it subtly clever:

Doritos Keep Your Hands off my Mama, it is kind of funny but aren't we past the precocious wise-cracking black child already?

Career Builder Casual Fridays. The new guy at work whom I now call "Work Smist" loved this one. That explains it:

Snickers Betty White and Abe Vigoda. Two classic comedians in the twilight of their careers joining forces for an hilarious commercial.
