The Search is Over
After years of looking for the best gore and scouring pictures of bull fights and the Running of the Bulls for pictures of people with bullhorns lodged in uncomfortable places.
We don't need to bother anymore. Here is the best (worst?) we should ever hope to see:
Matador Antonio Romero got an 11-inch bull horn right up the ass.
He needed full rectal reconstruction.
I guess he never saw "The Breakfast Club."

It Worked for Curt Schilling
Indians pitcher Trevor Bauer cut his finger on the propeller of a drone he was working on and needed 10 stitches in his pinky finger.
The stitches didn't hold and he was bleeding like a stuck pig, blood literally dripping off his hand during Game 3 of the ALDS. He didn't even survive an inning before the gaping wound forced him out of the game.
The Indians held on in that game and the Series and will now seek to win their first World Series in 68 years, and to deny the Cubs their first in 108.
By the way, the Red Sox streak was exactly 68 years in 1986. And it took them another 18 to finally get there, ending their streak at 86.
Bauer says his finger is patched up and ready to go for the World Series. So we won't see anymore items joining Curt Schilling's sock and OJ Simpson's glove and the most famous blood-soaked items in sports.

French Gymnast Snaps Leg
On the first day of the Rio Olympics we have an entry into the gruesome sports injury Hall of Fame.
French gymnast Samir Ait Said snapped his lower leg in half while landing a vault.
He joins Kevin Ware, Anderson Silva and Corey Hill as those who have suffered a complete snap of their leg during competition.

Another Thing JJ Watt and I Have in Common
I've been coaching Chase's youth baseball team this season and one day the other team decided not to show up. So we improvised and played parents versus kids. I planned to run have speed station-to-station, but I got up and ripped one to center, as I rounded first, the ball was rolling down a hill in the outfield so I decided to turn on the jets and try for a home run.
And boom! I felt something pull in the back of my right leg. I did get the home run, but a few days later I was left with this nasty bruise on the back of my leg.
It didn't hurt to the touch, but it felt tight for about two weeks afterwards.
When it finally healed, I decided to teach the kids a lesson about base running and not throwing the ball all over the field once a runner had already reached base. I took off running to first and felt that same feeling again, only this time in the other leg.
This incident reminded me of an old post from when JJ Watt suffered a similar injury.
It's still not clear what happened to him, whether he suffered a pulled muscle or it's just a horrible bruise, the type you could possibly sustain if a large man falls on top of you in the wrong way. But I am sure he handled it with the same toughness and I exhibited with mine.

Kiss Your Mother With That Mouth
Robbie Lawler won't be kissing anyone for a while I presume, because his lip was nearly ripped off his face during his fight with Rory MacDonald.
The old saw "you should have seen the other guy" holds true here as Robbie Lawler actually won the fight and held onto his belt, because he did this to Rory MacDonald's face

Cruisin' for a Bruisin'
It's not often that we include simple bruises in our ongoing collection of gruesome sports injuries -- but it's not every day we saw a bruise such as the one JJ Watt had on his upper leg, which he says he suffered during a game last September against the Bills.

He Looks Tougher
Boston Celtics center Kelly Olynyk played 22 minutes in a game against the Pacers with a hideous black eye caused by an elbow from teammate Shavlik Randolph. And he scored 19 points on 7 of 10 shooting.

Farewell to the GOAT of Crooked Fingers
Philadelphia Eagles legend Chuck Bednarik died this week at the age of 89.
He is known for three things:
1) he was the last player to play both offense and defense regularly in the NFL
2) he knocked out Frank Gifford, causing Gifford to miss a year and a half, and then stood over his stiff body
3) he was generally a tough son of a bitch. He is Godfather of the mangled finger. Anthony Munoz, Charles Mann, Alan Page and our own beloved Billy have Bednarik to thank for the glory he brought to hideously unaligned fingers.

It Only Took One Day For the First Gruesome Injury of the Season
Angels hitting coach and 1979 AL MVP (despite finishing 24th in the AL in WAR) Don Baylor was kneeling at home plate to catch the ceremonial first pitch from Angels legend Vladimir Guerrero, and this happened:
Diagnosis is a broken femur. Not quite sure how that happened. But the sickest part is not when he gets hurt, it's when he tries to stand and collapses back to the ground.
I'm not sure Guerrero knew immediately how serious the injury was. It looks like he is laughing.

Snap, Crackle, Pop
We've been chronicling gruesome sports injuries (that's your hint squeamish Poopheads) for many years here at the Poop and nothing may ever top the Kevin Ware injury in terms of national scope because it occurred in the NCAA Tournament with millions of people watching.
But, in terms of stature of athlete, Anderson Silva, unquestionably the greatest fighter in UFC history, is the biggest star we've ever cataloged in this space.
In his rematch fight with Chris Weidman, in an effort to regain the middleweight title he gave away in March by hot-dogging, Silva, lost the first round, and then early in the second round threw a leg kick. Weidman, who ate several leg kicks in the first fight, check the kick with his shin, and Silva's leg fractured.
Here's the moment of impact:
Here you can see the bone flopping around in his leg:
Immediately Silva went down in agony:
Immediately this was compared to the Corey Hill injury because it happened in exactly the same way, but in that fight, Hill was hopping around and Joe Rogan was screaming "STOP THE FIGHT!!!"
And again, this happened to a huge star in a title fight on a PPV bought by a million people.
Silva broke his fibula and tibia and immediately had them both surgically repaired. He's 38 and will be 39 (April 14) by the time he'll be healthy enough to fight again. I fully expect him to come back, fight once more next summer/fall and rematch Weidman about a year from now. But I wouldn't be shocked if the last image of this great champion is him lying on the mat screaming in agony as his lower leg hung loosely inside his skin. But it would be very sad.

That's Gonna Leave a Mark
Hockey can be a dangerous game. There are angry guys with sticks shooting frozen rubber discs at up to 100 miles an hour. And oh yeah, they are wearing very sharp skates on their feet.
Every once in a while one of those skates cuts someone.
That's what happened to Sebastian Courcelles during a Ligue Nord-Americaine de Hockey (LNAH) game in Quebec.
Warning: if you have a vagina you will probably not want to see this picture.
But don't worry, 50 stitches later, they fixed Courcelles up real nice, you can hardly tell.
Egad! That almost looks worse.
Kind of makes players who don't want to wear visors seem pretty dumb. Even though it might not necessarily have helped in this particular case.

Perfect Bedtime Story For Kayls
Having a deformed finger doesn't need to hold you back in life. I think that's the motto of a new children's book written by Alan Page, former Minnesota Vikings defensive lineman and leader of the Purple People Eaters, Alan and the Perfectly Pointy Impossibly Perpendicular Pinky.
In the story, Page, who really is a Minnesota State Supreme Court Justice, visits a school and one inquisitive child, asks what happened to his pinky.
The Page in the story then goes on to tell the true story of a pinky that had been severely dislocated several times during a football career.

Oh Snap
Tim Hudson suffering a gruesome leg injury during last night's game against the Mets.
This will be a lesson for youngsters, the fielder should always put his foot on the infield part of the bag, and allow the runner to step on the other half. This was a total accident, Eric Young didn't mean to do this, but he couldn't help it because Hudson put his foot in Young's way.

One of the Most Gruesome Sports Injuries of All Time
By now you've seen it (so you don't need to comment "I saw that") but I thought I would write something here, for the record, especially since I have posted several gruesome sports injuries (they have their own tag) and I would be remiss if I didn't include this one.
Kevin Ware's injury was so nasty (his leg snapped and the bone poked through the skin) that Louisville players were reportedly vomiting, or at least wretching, on the sidelines. I thought Duke's Tyler Thornton had been poked in the eye. He was wiping away tears. CBS showed a woman in the stands crying. Mrs. Poop thought it was Ware's mom, then they showed three other women doing the same thing.
Ware is already out of the hospital, and on crutches.
Doctors (though not those who treated him) say injuries like this can be repaired and they expect Ware to be ready for next season. I think that a broken bone like this, though gruesome, is easier to repair than a torn ligament like an ACL. And usually has a very good chance of returning to normal form. I hope that will be the case.
Many people are calling this the worst sports injury ever, and it certainly is up there. But I have two I think were a little bit worse.
Houston Cougars wide receiver Patrick Edwards broke his leg in a similar fashion, but what made it worse to me, is that he did it by running into a cart, that never should have been parked there.
But the worst one in my opinion is Corey Hill, a former UFC fighter, who snapped his leg in a similar fashion while delivering a leg kick. What makes his worse is that he's hopping around as another guy is trying to punch him, and his broken bone is wiggling around inside his skin. Joe Rogan is shrieking "stop the fight! stop the fight!"

Success and Sacrifice
On a recent episode of NFL Films Presents I caught up with some childhood heroes as the show visited a retreat sponsored by Coach Gibbs, gathering every player from the 4 Super Bowl teams he coached.
I was particularly moved by defensive end Charles Mann. He said when he wants to be reminded about his successes in life he looks at the ring finger on his right hand, where he wears his Super bowl ring.

When he wants to be reminded about the sacrifices needed to achieve that success he looks at the ring finger on his left hand.

Best Hematoma Ever?
Anyone who knows me knows I have an unhealthy obession with hematomas. It all started while watching a Holyfield-Rahman fight with JLeary and Shoeb.
I love Rahman's hematoma so much I use it for my image on blogger. I even used it for my picture during lookalike week on Facebook.

But a new hematoma has emerged possibly topping Rahman's in size and gruesomeness.
Check out Mark Hominick during his fight at UFC 129 against Jose Aldo. The amazing thing is, not only did they let him fight after several doctors' checks of it (actually squeezing it at one point), but Hominick dominated Aldo in the 5th round despite this huge thing growing on his head.

Looking back it seems like I love all UFC injuries, from Josh Koscheck's eye, to Marvin Eastman's cut (the original goat's vagina), to Brandon Vera's nose and to the most sickening, Corey Hill's broken leg.

I Think His Nose is Broken
Watch the UFC long enough and you will see some pretty gruesome things. Usually it's just a lot of blood (like Diego Sanchez after a beating from BJ Penn). You even see cuts so bad they get their own nickname like Marvin Eastman's Goat's Vagina. Sometimes you see a guy get his eye punched swollen shut like Josh Koscheck after GSP got through with him. And there is the occassional broken bone, like the freak broken leg Corey Hill suffered when his kick was checked.
But Saturday night during UFC 125 Brandon Vera's broken nose was so bad it even disgusted Vera himself. He saw his hideous visage on the Jumbotron and shielded his eyes.

How Could They Not Have Shown This?
Last night I watched UFC's Fight for the Troops ("they fight for us, now we fight for them") and I enjoyed a pretty good night of action. But then I saw that this happened on one of the fights on the undercard (those not shown on TV) and I'm shocked that they didn't fit this into the telecast.
Here's Corey Hill vs. Dale Hartt
"Stop the fight! Stop the fight!" Joe Rogan is so awesome.
Ridiculous! And I thought the guy who chose "snap" in a snap or tap situation got a bad injury, but that was nothing compared to this.

By the way, I started watching the show a little late and to catch up I scanned through all of the stories about the troops who got injured in Iraq and are now suffering traumatic brain injury. Is that wrong?

Bad Place to Park
Houston wide receiver Patrick Edwards runs into a cart parked in the back of the end zone during a game at Marshall.
Edwards shattered his right leg and had immediate surgery to put a rod in his leg. Doctors say he might be able to come back and play next season. He's only a redshirt freshman so hopefully he has time to come back and prove himself to NFL teams.
“I never saw (the cart),” Edwards said. “All I saw was the ball. It (the pass) was coming down, and I was concentrating on that. I didn’t see (the cart) until I hit it. I could see my leg, but it really didn’t hurt. The thing is that as soon as it (the injury) happened, my leg just went numb. I couldn’t feel anything.”
I have a feeling Edwards has a pretty good case against Marshall for having unsafe playing conditions. Marshall's AD says the carts have been parked there for two years without incident, but will be moved now.
And if you haven't already lost your lunch, here's the injury in a still picture.
