What Does the Focks Say?

I'm sure you've heard by now of this ridiculous pop sensation "What Does the Fox Say?"



It wasn't even meant to be a song. A Norwegian comedy duo did it on their show, and somehow, inexplicably, it spread around the world like a virus.

I do have to admit that I find the song catchy, though the video and the animal costumes really freak me out. But it has definitely jumped the shark.

Abercrombie and Fitch made its own video of the song and then came out with this t-shirt which is like a trifecta of cultural doucheyness.

If this song has gotten on my nerves you can only imagine what is has done to someone who shares a name with the song's title character.

I interviewed Focks for this post and he said people have said to him "what does the fox say?" so many times that it's affected his brain and made him likely to murder the next person who mentions that song to him.

I'm Upset Too, But This is Taking It Too Far

I am still hurting from Syracuse's loss to Michigan and a little disappointed about the end of the Big East and the entrance to the ACC next season.
But I think these Syracuse students? (losers?) took it too far with this Bohemian Rhapsody Parody.

Better Dance Craze?

There are two hilarious dance crazes sweeping the nation (or perhaps have swept) based on the actions of dead or dying characters in TV in movies.

First there is the Fred Sanford, which involves clutching your heart with your right hand, throwing your left straight into the air and teetering about with your head thrown back.

The Bernie Lomax has gone a little more mainstream, there's actually two songs "Moving Like Berney [sic]" by ISA and "The Bernie Lean" by ATM and IMD which caught on with the Oakland A's.

It's called "Bad Lip Reading." The NFL version is hilarious

The Entitlement Culture

There's lots of talk lately about "fair share" and the "1% vs. the 99%." Radio host Adam Carolla, known as a comedian, hits is right on the head in this 9-minute rant. It is a thing of beauty, and you should listen to the whole thing. But if you don't have that kind of patience skip forward to 5:55 into the video for the story about Mr. Jenkins. I'll offer my thoughts after you've watched it.



This nails it. Everything I have been saying for years. Giving people things they didn't earn teaches them that they don't have to work to get things. In the real world, you do. And I don't even think it's a stretch to go from "I play so I deserve a trophy" to "I live so I deserve a job."
Especially when everyone, including the President, is telling you that your failures are someone else's fault.
Yes, the system can be unfair. Yes, there are some people who have more through no accomplishment of their own, and some have nothing through no fault of their own. But in general, in our society, if we allow it to stay a meritocracy, everyone has the ability to build something for themselves. As long as we don't beat the personal responsibility and desire for achievement out of them.

They're So Cute At This Age

An elderly couple, Bruce and Esther Huffman, have become the darlings of the internet after they released a video they unknowingly recorded while trying to figure out how to use their webcam.
The Huffmans, in their 80s but only recently married were trying to record a video for their grandkids.
Surely they will enjoy Bruce making monkey faces, singing nonsense songs and tell Esther to pull down her dress.

I Would Give Him a Dollar to Record My Outgoing Voicemail Message

I often talk about something (though surprisingly I have never written about it here) called the Life Points Theory or PALPT. Basically it postulates that we are all of equal talents and blessings. Those among us who have one amazing gift are often robbed of abilities in other areas (really good looking dumb people, socially awkward geniuses, in the rare case, Stephen Hawking). That brings us to the story of Ted Williams, a homeless man in Columbus, Ohio who gained reknown among locals for his amazing voice.

That clip has gone viral and the offers are pouring in for Williams. He's reportedly got offers from the Cleveland Cavaliers to do in-arena announcing. Even NFL Films might be interested. Imagine how many bbms Juice and I would exchange about an episode narrated by that guy.

Seems like Mr. Williams is simply a man who fell on hard times, some of it self-inflicted, and is now willing to admit his mistakes, accept responsibility and move on with his great gifts. I wish him the best and hope to hear him voicing over NFL highlights in the near future.

Rex Ryan's Wife Puts Her Best Foot Forward

Rex Ryan basically admits his wife is in the foot fetish video. He says "it's a personal matter" over and over again. If it wasn't her, he would have just said "it's not her."





That even sounds like Rex's voice, and I'm sure it is.

The question is: why is this such a big deal? Why is this personally embarrassing? Note: I'm only talking about the videos, not the contest of the profiles allegedly appearing on certain websites. His wife is not doing any wrong, morally or legally. If she wants to show off her feet to foot fetishists on the internet (like TallSkott) that’s her business. Deviance is in the eye of the beholder. She has lovely feet and if someone derives sexual pleasure from looking at them that’s their problem and not hers. Or Rex Ryan’s. I understand why it’s a news story, people are interested, even I’m interested. I just don’t see how any part of this is can be construed as negative or personally embarrassing.

Here’s the best analogy I can make: I’m sure plenty of athletes are married to Victoria’s Secret models. They walk around in their underwear and put the video on TV, the internet you name it. They have nice boobs, she has nice feet. And I bet a lot more guys jerk off looking at Adriana Lima’s tits than Michelle Ryan’s feet.

So can someone please give me one good reason why the Ryans should be embarrassed or ashamed of this?

Get It While It Lasts

Throughout the history of time there popped up popular services offering unlimited access to copyrighted content (napster comes to mind). Those services are almost always shut down immediately. But for a brief time they provide access to all the content you want, totally free.
Right now we are living in the age of atdhe.net
The site offers access basically every game in the four major professional sports giving you basically free access to NFL's Sunday Ticket, MLB's Extra Inning and NBA's League Pass. Thanks to atdhe.net I have seen every Redskins game this year. Wait, maybe that's not such a good thing. I also get the Red Zone channel, which is awesome.
But perhaps the best feature is the free pay-per-views. I watched UFC 121 live for free. And if you're into that sort of thing tonight's Pacquiao-Margarito fight purports to be available free of charge as well.
Who knows if the site will still be up by tonight, but if it is, we should enjoy it while it lasts.

Is There a Lot of Dry Air in Chicago?

I can sympathize with this women. I really can. I know what it's like to have dry, hard boogers in your nose. You need to clean house but there is a TV camera and a person talking to it a few feet away. I understand all that. But eating it is where she lost me. She needed to flick it onto the floor and pretend nothing happened.

But good for CBS for exercising their copyright and removing this video from youtube. If you're going to stand in the way of content sharing, doing it to protect an employee from worldwide embarrassment is a pretty good reason.

Asian Flight Attendants Dance to the Music of Lady Gaga and Katy Perry

I actually wasn't too impressed with the video but since 6 million people watched it in the past week I figured it was worth passing along.

Pants on the Ground

The breakthrough star of the last relevant season of "American Idol" (before Simon leaves) is General Larry Platt. Not a military general, he earned that mythical title during his battles in the civil rights movement.

His now famous "Pants on the Ground" was inspired three years ago when he saw a guy walking down a downtown Atlanta street with a baby in his arm and his pants slipping below his hips. “He had his underwear showing,” Platt recalled. The song came to him spontaneously. He started chanting the chorus to “Pants on the Ground.” “He was being disrespectful so I wanted to embarrass him,” Platt said. “He rolled his eyes and pulled his pants up a little bit.”



The song sure is catchy, and a 62-year-old trying out for Idol is a little goofy as is the song itself. But not lost in the goofiness is the social message in the song. Young African-American men won't be taken seriously in society so long as they are "walking downtown with [their] pants on the ground."


As is always the case on the internet the song has created numerous copycats, starting with Jimmy Fallon's version as Neil Young:



Then there was Brett Favre singing it in the Vikings locker room after beating the Cowboys.

Muppets Go Viral

Much like the Muppets took Manhattan, they have taken the Web.
Since debuting last week, the Muppet parody of the classic music video of Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody" has been viewed more than 8.6 million times on YouTube. It's an exceptional hit for the first video posted on a new YouTube channel by the Muppets Studio, the Walt Disney Company subsidiary formed in 2004 after the Jim Henson Company sold the franchise.
A Twitter feed has also been launched. (It's mostly promotional; Kermit isn't blogging.) And a Facebook page has been started.
Muppets Studio general manager Lylle Breier said the online push for the Muppets was designed to help reboot the franchise and quickly get new content to fans.
"When the Muppets came into real popularity was the '70s. What was popular in the '70s? Variety shows -- that's what `The Muppet Show' was," said Breier. "What's the Web? It's a giant variety show. That's why the Muppets fit so perfectly. Parody has always been at the heart of what the Muppets do."
Breier said the Muppets singing "Bohemian Rhapsody" had long been an idea on the back burner, but the project only recently came together.
In it, just about every famous Muppet character makes a cameo: Gonzo and his chickens appear in silhouette; Rowlf plays piano; Beaker supplies his normal "meep-meep-meep-meep"; Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem rock out.
Animal bangs on the drums and gets to channel Freddie Mercury, singing "Mama!" He repeats it instead of singing the full, child-unfriendly line "Mama just killed a man/ Put a gun against his head/ Pulled my trigger/ Now he's dead."
It's not the Muppets first foray into online video. Several videos were released last year, most notably including Beaker singing "Ode to Joy." More than 7 million have since watched Beaker's rendition.
Breier says more Web videos are on the way. A version of "Carol of the Bells" will be released for Christmas, and a handful of other videos will follow in 2010.
The purpose of the sudden Muppet expansion is partly promotional. The Muppets have also recently made appearances on ABC's "Dancing With the Stars" and at the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. Last year's holiday special, "A Muppets Christmas: Letters to Santa" has recently been released on DVD and will air again Friday on NBC.
What is more important, a new, much-anticipated theatrical film is in the works. Jason Segel ("Forgetting Sarah Marshall") and his writing partner Nicholas Stoller have been writing a new Muppets film expected to return the franchise to its more acclaimed past.
"It's all part of a plan for new creative content with online, television, a new theatrical movie," said Breier. "We're bringing the Muppets back."

A strange thing is happening on Google. I'm sure you've noticed, when you type a search from the main page, it automatically offers the most popular suggestions starting with those letters.

If you Google "I am" the first thing it will display is "I am extremely terrified of Chinese people."

Boom Goes the Dynamite

Back when I was at Syracuse studying to be a broadcast journalism major I took a class senior year that required us to basically put on a local news style newscast, rotating jobs on a weekly basis. The next day in class we would watch the newscasts and critique them. My most embarrassing moment came when someone left the script to a package we had just aired in the teleprompter.
So after we see the package, I think I'm moving on to the next story, but I'm actually reading the script of the story we just saw. After about 2 sentences I realized the error, stopped reading, smirked, chuckled, looked down through my scripts and tried to find the correct story. This lasted about 10 seconds. 10 seconds that the professor played about 10 times in class.
I may have deserved this ridicule because the previous week I had agitated for the professor to replay repeatedly a gaffe involving two girls who began speaking at the same time (neither one of them could be understood) then they both stopped for a few seconds, and started speaking again at the exact same time. So it sounded like this (fadsghasogheiuoghawioghdsghadsgfdsk - 5 second awkward pause - fhadsjahigiudwghadsgkjadsgadsgadsjfnask), until one of them stopped and the other continued reading.
All of this is goes to say that the first time I saw this now famous clip of Brian Collins doing sports for the campus station at Ball State University, yes I laughed heartily, but I also cried a little on the inside.



Thankfully, my embarrassing moment was not nearly as bad, nor was it put on the internet and viewed millions of times (even before youtube made viewing things millions of times so easy).
So it does my heart good to report to you that Brian "Boom Goes the Dynamite" Collins has put this sorry episode behind him and is now a news reporter in Waco, Texas.

But he still has a little work to do on his delivery.
