When the Memphis Grizzlies beat the Los Angeles Clippers Tuesday night, the Clippers fell into the sixth spot in the Western Conference playoffs, earning them a date against the third seeded Denver Nuggets. Since the Nuggets won their division they are given the third seed, but since they have a worse record than the Clippers, the Clippers get home court.
And for the Grizzlies? Show them what they've won...the fifth seed in the playoffs, an opening round series against the Dallas Mavericks (who won 16 more games than the Nuggets) and best of all, the Grizzles don't get home court.
I don't think the NBA needs to change this because it's a freak occurrence (especially that the two teams would play each other in the last week of the season) but if they want to keep the sanctity of division titles, then maybe division winners should get first round home court no matter what. But that really isn't fair either.
