Mets vs. Braves: Running Blog

How did this running blog work for you? Did you read it? Enjoy it? Should I bother doing it during the next weekday afternoon game?

I think Jose Valentin dyes his moustache. It's jet black without even a streak of gray.

------------------------------------------------------------------

Game over. Delgado flied out to left and Wright grounded weakly to short. You knew the offense was going to slow down eventually but 1 run and 3 hits in each of the past two games is awful. And once again they wasted another great performance by Glavine. He's pitched well enough to be 4-0. Instead he's 2-1. As far as he's concerned little has changed since last year and the year before. And if Floyd and Beltran don't come back, and start hitting, this team is gonna end up right where those two teams were. This lineup is awful right now. Reyes and Wright haven't had a hit in days, other than Reyes' double in the ninth. And going to the West Coast is not going to make things easier. I know 10-4 is still a very good record but I'm starting to worry. - 3:11

------------------------------------------------------------------

Reyes doubled, Woodward singled him home, both with two strikes. Delgado is up with the tying run on first. - 3:06 PM

------------------------------------------------------------------

2-0 now. David Wright made a bad throw on a grounder by Tony Pena allowing him to reach. Hudson sacrificed, Orr chopped one to the pitcher which moved Pena to third. Then Betemit hit one right to Wright, he misplayed it, his second error of the inning and third of the game. Needless to say the Shea faithful have shelved the MVP chants, at least for now. - 2:51 PM

------------------------------------------------------------------

Another chance slipped away. Woodward hit one deep in the hole but Pena was able to throw him out. Then Hudson walked Delgado and hit Wright (hitless in last 10 at-bats). Then Nady grounded into a tailor-made double play. With all these automatic outs in the lineup I don't think we have a chance to come back. - 2:42 PM

------------------------------------------------------------------

Home run Andruw Jones. His fourth in this three game series. Glavine pitched him tough the first two times but he finally got a changeup he could handle. - 2:30 PM

------------------------------------------------------------------

Shit. Glavine sacrificed beautifully. Then Reyes swung at the first pitch and hit a medium fly to left. Castro is so slow. Diaz (pronounced Dye-az) made a perfect throw, Pratt had the ball and blocked the plate, Castro was dead meat. Still no score. - 2:25 PM

------------------------------------------------------------------

Ramon Castro breaks up the perfect game with a single to left. Then Chavez grounded one slowly to Brian Jordan (playing first base), Jordan bounced his throw to second, Pena dropped it and right now there are two on and none out for Glavine. I hope they win this game for him. He is really pitching great. Even better than last time when he struck out 11 guys.

It's funny to see Roger McDowell as the pitching coach. - 2:19 PM

------------------------------------------------------------------

Still 0-0. The Mets don't even have a hit. The Braves just got their second, from Jeff Francoeur, but it should have been an error on Reyes. He didn't charge because he thought Wright might field it, so then he fielded the ball in the hole and just let it fly, way over Delgado's head. But Castro threw out Francoeur trying to steal.

I think Todd Pratt was juiced when he hit that homer against the Diamondbacks. He looks much thinner now. Gary Cohen said this year will likely be his 10th straight year catching the second most games on his team, tying a major league record and making him the quintessential backup catcher. - 2:08 PM

------------------------------------------------------------------

This game is going even faster than yesterday's. The first three innings were played in about half an hour. At this rate the game will be over before 3. Glavine threw only 24 pitches in the first three innings. Hudson threw 35, but hasn't allowed a base runner.

They showed some guy in the stands wearing a jersey with Cohen on the back. They made the required Gary Cohen joke.

Tom Glavine talked about his routine between starts, and how young guys just throw and veterans working on things. Ron Darling followed that up with "practice doesn't make perfect. Perfect practice makes perfect." - 1:49 PM

------------------------------------------------------------------

The Braves shortstop today is Tony Pena Jr., son of former Pirates catcher and Royals manager Tony Pena. Professor Reyes would be disappointed that blogger doesn't let me spell their names with the tilde. Fernando Vina once omitted the tilde on his own last name in an autograph given to Reissberg. - 1:30 PM

------------------------------------------------------------------
Off to a rough start. I forgot to DVR the game, and since both teams went down 1-2-3 in the first by the time I got home to pause it, we were already in the second inning.

Beltran and Floyd are both out again. I thought this was going to be a minor injury? Beltran missed four games already. He'll go on the DL and come back gimpy as he was last year. - 1:23 PM

Running diary cool. Didn't get a chance to read as the game went on, so it was more like a recap for me. But, on those other lazy work days it'll be fun to get your take as I watch gamecast at my desk.
